  1. I learned that the company Nokia manufactures 13 cell phones every second. And that the website Linked In grew at a rate of 1 million members per month for a period of time.

  2. I learned that traditional marketing methods are decreasing in popularity quickly due to online marketing being more cost effective. I find this amusing because a simple add-on for chrome such as ad block removes all the ads from the web pages you view.

    1. I was wondering that too. How effective are online ads? If they aren't being blocked by ad block or something of the sort I never even acknowledge them. With such high traffic though, who knows who is going to be exposed to it.

    2. This makes me wonder how much it costs to publish and online ad as opposed to an ad on tv such as a commercial. I known that when I am on the internet, I hardly notice the ads anymore.

  4. I almost never think about how much technology has consumed our lives, because it's been a part of my life since I can remember. All of the statistics presented to us in "Shift Happens" and "The World of Social Media" surprised me. For example, if Facebook were a country it would the third most populated in the World! Nowadays, almost everyone has a Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. and they are slowly becoming a "necessity" to people, just like food and water. The internet has grown 14% from 2009, and will only continue to grow in the upcoming years. It's ridiculous to think what our technology will have advanced to in twenty years.

    1. This video has really opened my eyes the worlds need of technology. I totally agree with you that almost everybody is on social media websites. For example even my grandmother is on a social media website, which I find to be very funny. Also I believe as technology becomes more improved even more people will become hooked on technology. Also people will always want the newer and better product, so people will always want technology.

  5. Most of the facts that were presented in "Shift Happens" and "The World of Social Media" were both surprising and not surprising at the same time. When you think about how many tweets were tweeted in 2010, you know that it is a large number, but when you find out it was 25,000,000,000 you find out just how many there were. When a number is put in place of the thought "large" it gives it much more meaning. Two facts that surprised me the most were how many YouTube videos are watched each day: 2,000,000,000 and of all the songs that were downloaded how many were illegal; 95%.

    1. Yes, Leanza, The amount of illegally downloaded music is astonishing-- and not in a good way! I feel as though the people who make their music are not getting the credit they deserve when their music is illegally downloaded. However, I do believe this video was made before "Limewire" was shut down. Do you think the percentage of illegally downloaded music has decreased since then?

  6. What always surprises me is how technology is eliminating physical forms of media. I always wounder when newspapers will not be available in the grocery store. I prefer reading newspapers, magazines, and books offline. I can understand why many people prefer online because it is more convenient. I hope books never go completely away.

    1. I agree, I like to read a book in a physical form over a digital form. Im fine with reading articles and the such online as they are shorter, but if I am going to be reading something for a while i like the feel of a paper book.

    2. This surprised me too. What would happen if one day we walked into the grocery store just to find that newspapers and books were out of our life for good? would this effect our economy? It would surely put people out of work. This is why I always try to purchase a physical copy, whether it be a newspaper or CD.

    3. I like this thought, because I absolutely agree with it. I can never imagine myself owning a Kindle and buying my books from there. One of the most content feelings is casually browsing a bookstore and grabbing any books that looks interesting and reading the summary off of the back. It's sad to see what technology has done to bookstores around the World, especially the Village Bookstore right in Littleton.

  7. The two videos surprised me in many ways. First, I was astonished to hear that the average teenager sends close to 3000 text messages in a month. I surely don't text that much. I was also amazed to hear that 95 percent of songs downloaded last year were not paid for. This immediately makes me wonder how the music industry is doing so well. Finally, I was surprised to see that two billion youtube videos are watched every day. That's more videos than watched than there are people in the country.

    1. I was also shocked that the average texts for teenage were so high. I know that most music was illegally downloaded, but not 95%. I was thinking more in the 80% range or a little smaller. Watching the two videos really showed how obsessed our world is with technology.

    2. Knowing how well the music industry is doing, making as much money as they do, and that 95% of music is illegally downloaded, can you imagine how well they would be doing if even just 75% was illegally downloaded? Never mind 20-10%. I don't think that nearly as many songs would be downloaded if you couldn't do so illegally.

  8. I was surprised on most of the information that I learned watching those to clips. Technology and social media websites have taken over peoples lives and has become necessary for most people. I would have never thought that 2 billion videos are being watched on Youtube per day. It is amazing that 95% of all must music is gotten illegally. Seeing that 2272 is the average amount of texts per month for teenagers is amazing, it shows that technology is taking over our life. Also internet has grown 14% in the past 4 years and it will continue to grow in the up coming years.

  9. Texting has become a huge part of our society. Most Americans have a cell phone, and use it to communicate with friends. One thing that surprised me from the first video was the amount of texts sent by a teen in one month. He sent over 217,000 texts in a month. That is equivalent to 7,233 per day, or 301 per hour, or five per minute, constantly for an entire month. I think this is a ridiculous amount. I send less than one thousand in a month. It amazes me that this person felt the need to always be talking to someone. To me it seems needy. I have heard stories of people being addicted to their devices, but I never thought it could be as bad as this.

    1. Statistics are scary aren't they? I agree with you; I don't send more than 1,000 texts per month. I also agree that it seems needy. It is weird to me that people would rather text constantly than have a face to face conversation. Or even call each other. I feel that humans are loosing touch with nature and each other. I never want to be the two people on a date, or out to lunch who are sitting there texting one another back and forth instead of talking to one another!

  10. Both these videos were both interesting as well as informative. I found it interesting to see how in 2009, the three most trending topics were Obama, Michael Jackson, and Swine Flu. It is fascinating to know that in the future, we can look back to any given year and be able to see what was trending the most.
The entirety of both these videos however was generally nothing more than we could have already assumed. It is general knowledge now that the use of technology to spread news and information is rapidly becoming more and more used than newspapers and magazines.
I did find it crazy to think of how many text messages teenagers send per month. But, once I buckled down the numbers, I thought, "thats only 100 texts a day" which for me, personally, is maybe 3 different conversations. This number could be seen as extreme to someone else-- but this only proves how accustomed our generation has gotten to this sort of lifestyle

  11. What surprised me about watching this video? I am not really surprised that so many people are now using social media sites. For example 175 million log into facebook every day, overtaking google for the most visited site. This shows that just one site of social media is more popular than almost any site. What did surprise me was 95 percent of songs last year were not payed for, 90 percent of the emails sent today are spam. This surprised me because it shows that so many people our misusing the power of the internet. All of these forms of technology are a great tool to use for almost everyone. These people are not using the internet as the tool that it was meant for, they are using it for their own selfish needs. Technology should mostly be used to speed up the process of writing, and research. Though we will always have the abusers of this great tool. CSi

    1. I agree that that the internet is used wrongfully very often as well. I think that having access to illegally download music, and even illegally download TV shows and movies, is a problem as well. Websites like "pirate bay" should be taken down- or so I think.
